Eraser Negative Space

Now to put it into practice.

Instruction: Grab a simple object like a coffee mug or tea pot; something with a handle. Set it up somewhere comfortable in front of you. Next, fill your page with soft charcoal until it is nice and dark. Use the kneadable eraser to draw in the negative spaces, and attempt to judge the distances between the negative space until you have erased all of the space around the object. Try and forget what it is you’re drawing and just focus on the shapes and angles the object creates.

Materials: soft charcoal (willow), kneadable eraser, paper, object to draw
(alt. materials – soft pencil, at least a 6B, normal eraser and paper.)

Timer: 20 mins
